I am very excited to begin this academic journey as a Masters student and TA! I am the first person in my family to graduate from university and I have a true passion for writing. I have BA honours specialization in Canadian American relations and a minor in sexuality studies from Western. My research will focus on a comparative analysis of rape culture and intra-military sexual assault within the United States Armed Forces and Canadian Armed Forces. |

Marilyn Obaseki

Having had a fascination with US politics, culture and history my entire life, I am excited to explore it in depth in the American Studies Masters program at Western University. I obtained by bachelors degree at Brock University in Political Science, where I studied government, public law and administration. During the third year of the program, I obtained my Paralegal diploma at Seneca College and then subsequently my Paralegal License (P1). Ever since undergrad, I have been working in the public sector, specifcally in the criminal and civil divisions of the the Ministry of the Attorney General. I look forward to exploring areas of race, American foreign affairs, politics, human rights and culture in the American Studies Master’s program. My research will touch upon the historical debate of racial inequality in the U.S. |

Jack Sly

Having grown up in the U.K., I have always viewed Canada, the U.S. and Britain as siblings. Culturallly, politically and historically, we are undeniably similar. As a Political Science graduate, I have watched American elections with great interest and invariably draw comparisons to elections at home. My research interest primarily is to try and gain a better understanding of the effect that American political election culture has on contemporary Canadian election practices. Western provides a unique opportunity for me to gain a deeper academic understanding of one culture whilst living in another. |

Julia Vance

A recent Western alumna, Julia holds her Honours BA in English Language and Literature. Throughout her undergraduate studies, she focused on 20th and 21st century American literature and American popular culture texts, an interest that lead to the completion of her undergraduate thesis. Entitled "You're No One Until You're Talked About: The Use of Gossip and the Policing of Gender in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth and The CW's Gossip Girl", Julia's thesis examined continuity and change in the policing of gender roles in the elite upper-class of New York City society and how these roles are represented through Wharton's turn of the century novel and the teen television drama Gossip Girl. Excited to continue her studies at Western in the MA of American Studies program, Julia will turn to her other research interest, animal studies, in her examination of the United States' "ag-gag" laws and the prevention of visual documentation of operations within animal enterprises. Working within an interdisciplinary lens, Julia hopes to research the evolution of these laws and the visual culture they prohibit, ultimately examining videography and photography as forms of protest for animal rights. Aside from academia, Julia is a content writer for Thought Catalog and Unwritten and is an advocate for removing the stigma around mental health. She's been a pianist since she was eight and spent a year conducting a small jazz band. Having grown up in London and around Western, she can't imagine anywhere else she'd rather continue her education. |
