American Studies Speakers' Series
Each year, the Centre for American Studies Speakers' Series invites diverse and dynamic speakers to Western to engage students and faculty in discussions about American culture, history, politics, and current events. Admission is free for all events, and everyone is welcome to attend. The Speakers' Series is sponsored by the Centre for American Studies and generously supported by the Consulate General of the United States.

Dr. Elizabeth Hoover is an Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ehtnic Studies at Brown University.

Robert Perkinson is an Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is the author of Texas Tough: The Rise of America’s Prison Empire (Metropolitan/Henry Holt, 2010), a history of racism, politics, and imprisonment from slavery to the present. His research areas include political history, international relations, and criminal justice, and he has been published in the New York Times, Boston Review, The Nation, New Republic, and in scholarly journals. From 2010 to 2015, Perkinson directed the State of Hawai‘i’s bid to establish an Obama presidential center in Honolulu.
